چکیده

This paper presents a novel velocity estimation method for all terrain ground vehicles. The technique is based on a camera that scans the ground and estimates the velocity by using an optical flow algorithm. The method is tested and validated for different types of terrains such as fine sand, coarse sand, gravel as well as a mixture of coarse sand and gravel. Measured velocities from precise encoders are compared with the velocities predicted by the optical flow algorithm, showing promising potential for implementation of the suggested approach in ground vehicles. Investigations have been carried out to determine the optimal feature window size and the influence of camera height on optical flow velocity estimates. Detailed laboratory experiments were carried out to validate the velocity estimation technique and results indicate the usefulness of the proposed method for velocity estimation of ground vehicles.

Estimation of along-track velocity of road vehicles in SAR data

At the German Aerospace Center, DLR, an automatic and operational traffic processor for the TerraSAR-X ground segment is currently under development. The processor comprises the detection of moving objects on ground, their correct assignment to the road network, and the estimation of their velocities. Since traffic flow parameters are required for describing dynamics and efficiency of transport...

Vehicle Tracking and Speed Estimation using Optical Flow Method

This paper presents a novel velocity estimation method for ground vehicles. The task here is to automatically estimate vehicle speed from video sequences acquired with a fixed mounted camera. The vehicle motion is detected and tracked along the frames using optical flow algorithm. The distance traveled by the vehicle is calculated using the movement of the centroid over the frames and the speed...

Global Optimization for Motion Estimation with Applications to Ultrasound Videos of Carotid Artery Plaques

Motion estimation from digital video is an ill-posed problem that requires a regularization approach. Regularization introduces a smoothness constraint that can reduce the resolution of the velocity estimates. The problem is further complicated for ultrasound videos (US), where speckle noise levels can be significant. Motion estimation using optical flow models requires the modification of seve...

Correlation Flow: Robust Optical Flow Using Kernel Cross-Correlators

Robust velocity and position estimation is crucial for autonomous robot navigation. The optical flow based methods for autonomous navigation have been receiving increasing attentions in tandem with the development of micro unmanned aerial vehicles. This paper proposes a kernel cross-correlator (KCC) based algorithm to determine optical flow using a monocular camera, which is named as correlatio...

A Study of Feature Extraction Algorithms for Optical Flow Tracking

Sparse optical flow algorithms, such as the Lucas-Kanade approach, provide more robustness to noise than dense optical flow algorithms and are the preferred approach in many scenarios. Sparse optical flow algorithms estimate the displacement for a selected number of pixels in the image. These pixels can be chosen randomly. However, pixels in regions with more variance between the neighbors will...
